6th Humana Distaff For Fillies and Mares 4 years old and Up, Grade 1 run at 7 furlongs

With four contenders all primed for big races the 2019 Distaff is one of the most competitive races on Derby Day. 2 – Spiced Perfection (7-2) has won 3 of her last 4 including victories in two Grade 1 contests. 3 – Mia Mischief (12-1) and 4 – Talk Veuve to Me (4-1) have had their time in the sun and their best days are behind them. Talk Veuve to me might be primed for a huge performance dropping down to 7 furlongs so she is worth keeping an eye on if her odds rise. 5 – Amy’s challenge (4-1) has never won going 7 furlongs, but is talented and had a 2 race winning streak stopped in the Madison by Spiced Perfection. 7 – Marley’s Freedom (7-5) is the only true 7 furlong mare in this race. Bob Baffert and Mike Smith team up on this deserving favorite. Yes her speed figures have declined over the past 3 races, but she handles off tracks fine and with poor weather expected she is definitely the horse to key on.

7th Distaff Turf for Fillies and Mares 4 years old and Up, Grade 2 run at 1 Mile

With no less than 5 fillies and mares with a real shot in the race to say it’s a crap shoot is an understatement. 3 – Proctor’s Ledge (5-1) will need to run back to last year’s form to win. She’s shown Grade 1 ability in the past but has had 4 straight poor performances all under the experienced hand of Johnny V. 4 – Beau Recall (10-1) has been on absolute fire since shipping to Fair Grounds earlier this year. In three races she’s won twice and finished second once, but this is a step up in class the only question is does she have the talent to compete against this field. 6 – Precieuse (3-1) runs for the all world combination of Javier Castellano and Chad Brown. She’s had two races in the U.S. winning one and finishing second in the other. 9 – Environs (8-1) is another Chad Brown mare who is a Euro superstar in the making. She won her only U.S start by 3+ lengths and gets Jose Oritz on the mount. 10 – Valedictorian (6-1) has finished in the money 7 straight times and never finished more than 3 lengths behind the winner.

8th The Churchill Downs for 4 year olds and Up, Grade 1 run at 7 Furlongs

2- Limousine Liberal (5-1) is past his prime but is an off track monster. He’s 3 for 3 in the slop and if the rain turns the track to mush expect him to romp in a splashing victory. 4 – Bobby’s Wicked One (10-1) has won 3 straight all with high speed figures. He’s stepping up in class here and will need to put in his best performance to date. He has had success over sloppy tracks before finishing second twice in two tries. 6 – Promises Fulfilled (4-1) normally I would be all over him in this spot, but horses usually need one for two races to get back to form after returning from Dubai. 8 – Mitole (7-2) Ricardo Santana Jr and Steve Asmussen have a knack for teaming up in big races and making crazy things happen. Mitole winning would not be crazy given the fact that he has won 5 in row including 2 over sloppy tracks. 12 – Whitmore (4-1) has finished first or second in 7 straight races. He is always in form and always puts in an honest effort.

9th The American Turf for 3 year olds, Grade 2 run at 1 1/16

In classic turf racing form this race is wide open and even in the turn for home we won’t know more than we do now. 1 – Thread of Blue (3-1) has 2 wins at 1 1/16 and 3 wins in row overall. He has no experience on soft or yielding turf and has never broke 90 in speed figures. 3 – Digital Age (6-1) when Klaravich, Chad Brown and Irad Oritz team up you don’t need anymore information or reason to bet the horse. He is two for two, but has never gone over a mile. 7 – Casa Creed (6-1) is a step below A Thread of Blue and Digital Age, but has talent and seems to enjoy the extra distance. Johnny V and Bill Mott are looking for this colt to make a big move. 8 – Avie’s Flatter (6-1) has won 3 in a row all at 1 1/16, but hasn’t shown the top speed figures that others have in this race.

Bets – Exacta Box 1,3,7,8 Win 1 and 8

10th Pat Day Mile for 3 year olds, Grade 3 run at 1 mile

The Pat Day Mile is the first stop on the Derby Dropout Trail. 1 – Durkin’s Call (15-1) won his last start by 7 lengths over fellow Derby Dropout Kosciuszko. If his odds hold he is a major play. 8 – Manny Wah (10-1) had a lot of success on the Derby trail before falling short in the Lecomte and Risen Star. 9 – Captain Von Trapp (15-1) is a Trappe Shot colt who had 2 wins at 6 furlong and 1 mile before a disappointing 6thin the Rebel. He is very dangerous at this distance and handles the slop well, posting a win in his only try. 10 – Instagrand (6-5) He is the classic Derby dropout that will go onto great things as a miler. He hasn’t run on off tracks yet, but other than that he is the deserving favorite. 14 – Last Judgment (5-1) has 2 wins in 3 races, one at 1 mile and one at 1 1/16th. His low odds scare me considering how lightly raced he is.

11th The Old Forester Turf Classic for 4 year olds and Up, Grade 1 run at 1 1/8th

2 – Raging Bull (5-1) is one of Chad Brown’s seemingly endless amount of entries in this race. He is a Grade 1 winner and has won 3 of his last 5. He has never gone a mile and an eighth, but he finished a strong and surprising 4th in his last effort. 5 – Markitoff (10-1) finished a strong second over the yielding Churchill turf at this distance and in November. Manny Franco is an aggressive rider and should get the best out him, his speed figures are increasing, but he only has 2 wins in 23 lifetime races. 9 – Synchrony (8-1) has back to back 100+ speed figures and is always near the top at the finish. He is training well and is certainly a top level. 10 – Ticonderoga (8-1) Javier Castellano and Chad Brown team up on this horse who has finished in the money in 4 of his last 5. He won over yielding turf at 1 1/16thbut has never gone a mile and an eighth. 12 – Bricks and Mortar (5-2) the last of Brown’s entries and easily the most accomplished. 3 straight wins, distance is not an issue, and has 100+ speed figures in each of those 3 races. He has won on yielding turf and is the horse to beat.
